Good Morning, All:
Mongoose has released the latest draft of the Developer’s Pack for Traveller, which included, among other things, the Fair Use Policy that has governed the release of Stellar Reaches in the past. Other things that have been included in the Developer’s Pack are the Foreven Sector Logo License (which allows publications in the OTU, but only in the Foreven Sector) and the Traveller Logo License (which allows for the use of a Traveller Compatible logo). While these elements are not yet fully complete, it is likely that we are seeing something close to the final product. Thus, these documents give us an idea of what may lie ahead for Stellar Reaches.
To my understanding, here are our options:
1. If we want to continue to support the Empty Quarter sector and the rest of the OTU, then we will be able to use the Fair Use Policy. However, using the Fair Use Policy means that we cannot publish anything that supports the Mongoose Traveller rules set.
2. If we want to support the Mongoose Traveller rules set and publish in the OTU, then we will have to limit our involvement in the OTU to the Foreven Sector only. This would allow us to support all of the Traveller rules sets AND the OTU.
3. If we want to support all Traveller rules sets, and not worry about the OTU, then we will have to limit our involvement to a non-OTU setting. It is possible for us to create our own setting for the fanzine under the Fair Use Policy, but the fan support may be more limited than an OTU approach would be.
I personally do not feel strongly towards any particular option being presented above, as I do not game in the Empty Quarter sector. However, I recognize that Stellar Reaches fans may have some strong opinions on the matter, and so I’d like to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to see for the future of Stellar Reaches before I make any decisions.
With Warm Regards,
Jason “Flynn” Kemp,
Editor, Stellar Reaches Fanzine
The more info that is out there for everyone to use the better. The stuff I sent in was a site neutral as I could make it following the new time line…well what I thought was the new OTU time/story line.
I just use the general information for the stellar reaches, which has been very useful, and place it where ever the party is going. Which ever format is used will work for me. I run T20 now and plan to run T20 in the future. It gets old and expensive to have to change to a new game every 3 or so years.

Hi Flynn, I’m all for keeping the Empty Quarter background as I’ve developed a gigantic campaign arc of adventures that I was planning to submit to SR as time went on. Can we go systemless and by proxy support all traveller versions. I think we only need the fair use policy if we publish mongoose specific stats/ships etc. So systemless might be best
How will this effect publication of #9?
I agree with Commander Drax, keep the Empty Quarter setting, I wont use mongoose anyway.
I would say the more info the better. I am planning on using the new Mongoose system as I believe it is a much cleaned up version of CT, which I have always liked the best out of all the different systems.
Each person here probably has a totally different opinion so that’s why I was saying that the more info the better.
Love this site, thanks so much for all your hard work, Jason!
Hi Flynn,
My preference would be to continue to publish the Empty Quarter sector and the rest of the OTU under the Fair use Policy, making it clear that there is no intention to support the Mongoose Traveller rules set.
That way Stellar Reaches could continue to produce material for the Traveller community.
Those using the Mongoose Traveller rules may have to do some convertion, but I think that is a small price to pay for the continued production of Stellar Reaches and it’s outstanding contribution to the Traveller community.
Best regards,
Ewan
I’d like to keep using the OTU. I don’t think the jury is in yet on the Mongoose system and while it’s probably good limiting everything to the Foreven Sector seems counter productive.
As a guess, I’m thinking that most Traveller players started with differnent system, CT, MT, T20, etc. Limiting ourselves to a new, untried system seems a little foolhardy so lets just do what we’ve been doing.
A neutral sounding board such as this site is always a good thing if just reminiscing over the glory days of CT or expressing thoughts about the most current incarnations. My two cents would be keep publishing SR if only for the reasons stated above. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to the site and CT as a whole.
Jason — Marc and I were wondering what the status of Stellar Reaches is… Please tell me it hasn’t disappeared…
And I’d like to discuss the possibility of writing an article or series of articles for various fanzines that would be owned/copyrighted by FFE…
Anyway, please contact me!
Can you do both?
Even issues of SR supports OTU under Fair Use.
Odd issue of SR supports Mongoose.
Why can’t we have both?
