Travellers who like their pirates daring are invited to visit the Top 10 Audacious acts of Piracy. I plan to focus on Koxinga myself, in the next issue of Stellar Reaches (still due in August).

Who is Koxinga? A truly powerful Japanese/Chinese pirate, leader of 20,000 men, who later worked to save the Ming dynasty. He is forgotten in the West (but beloved in the East) because he managed to beat the Dutch out of Formosa (now Taiwan) as discussed in this article. Very interesting info on East vs West military operations in the mid-17th century: with some reworking, the enterprising Traveller referee can make a very cool scenario out of it!
